Gign is pleased to have been selected to stream Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Septet for Wynton Marsalis’s latest composition, “The Democracy! Suite”. As The Financial Times recently noted, The Democracy! Suite is “one of the brightest Lincoln Center projects to be recorded for a while.” GiGn is proud to co-present this event, exclusively in Canada with the Victoria Jazz Society and Jazz at Lincoln Centre of New York. This performance not only honors the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. but also celebrates Black History Month. The Democracy! Suite is being streamed on GiGn on Feb 2nd.
Wynton Marsalis has been an admirer of Martin Luther King Jr since his days in college. As Jazz radio station KSDS FM in San Diego noted recently, “Martin Luther King Jr. believed that Jazz was the soundtrack to the Civil Rights era. He loved Jazz and appreciated its cultural significance and his connection to his dream.” Like many musicians these days, the Covid Lockdown has found Wynton Marsalis more time to focus on composition as performance is not possible. One fantastic result is Marsalis’s new composition, The Democracy! Suite.
The Suite aims to entertain, inspire, and uplift audiences with the full vigor, vision, and depth of America’s music. And who couldn’t use a little uplift these days. Led by trumpeter/composer Wynton Marsalis, the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, this concert features seven members from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra: Elliot Mason trombone, Ted Nash saxophone/flute, Walter Blanding saxophones, Dan Nimmer piano, Carlos Henriquez bass, and Obed Calvaire drums.
Don’t worry if you miss the show on Feb 2nd.
The Canadian Premiere will be shown Feb 2nd, at 10pm CST, 7pm PST. It will remain online on GiGn’s pay per view platform for one week until Monday Feb 8th.
